There is something about the French River that feels made for a fishing trip. Days often begin before sunrise, when the water slips through rocky channels, broad bays, quiet backwaters and island-filled stretches where every bend looks fishy.
At Wolseley Lodge, guests stay at the mouth of the Wolseley River on Wolseley Bay. It is a drive-to fishing and family lodge, established in 1928, about three and a half hours north of Toronto.
A storied Ontario river
The French River runs from Lake Nipissing toward Georgian Bay through 105 kilometres of connected lakes, gorges and rapids. It was the first river named to the Canadian Heritage Rivers System, thanks to its place in Indigenous travel, the fur trade and the voyageur era.
For today's visitor, that water route offers wild scenery with easy drive-to access. Wolseley Lodge guests have about 25 kilometres of navigable water nearby, with 77 islands, countless weed beds, rocky shoals and depths reaching more than 36 metres in some places.
Fishing through spring, summer and fall
That range of water keeps fishing interesting through the open-water season. Walleye, northern pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and muskie are the main attractions, while crappie, perch, catfish and several other species add more choices.
Anglers can work current seams, deep holes, rocky edges, weed lines and protected bays without spending the whole day running across open water. Some guests arrive with years of river fishing behind them, while others are learning how to jig, cast or troll. Guides are available for those who want help reading the river and finding likely areas.
Bring a boat or rent one
Wolseley Lodge offers several ways to plan the trip. Guests may bring their own boat and use docks, many with hydro, or rent one from the lodge. Its 16-foot extra-wide Legend fishing boats have 25-horsepower electric-start motors, livewells, and power trim and tilt.
Fishing packages may include the cabin, boat, fuel, live bait and firewood. A map showing fishing spots, rocks and drop-offs helps newcomers spend less time guessing. There is also a fish-cleaning hut and freezer space for the catch guests choose to keep.
Fishing rules vary across Zone 11 and its exceptions, so anglers should check the current Ontario regulations before heading out.
Sixteen cabins by the bay
After fishing, guests return to 16 cabins ranging from one to four bedrooms. They can choose a riverside cabin on level ground or a hillside cabin with views over Wolseley Bay.
Each cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, fridge and freezer, microwave, coffee maker, bathroom with shower, hot water, baseboard heat, charcoal barbecue and a campfire area. Cabins do not have air conditioning, though some have ceiling fans. Screened windows and doors help keep insects outside. Guests should bring top bedding, bath towels and personal toiletries.
Housekeeping or a meal plan
Housekeeping stays suit guests who like cooking their own meals, while the meal plan removes much of the daily work. The meal package includes packed breakfasts and lunches to take on the boat, followed by dinner in the dining room. Depending on the package, a boat, gas, live bait, ice and firewood may also be included.
Plenty for families to do
Wolseley Lodge also works well when not everyone in the group fishes from dawn to dusk. The sandy beach, pirate-ship playground, games room, canoes, kayaks, paddle boards and pedal boats give families plenty to do.
Evenings can end beside a private cabin firepit, swapping stories about the fish that got away. With river access, practical cabins, boat rentals, meal choices and years of welcoming fishing groups, Wolseley Lodge makes a strong home base for guests returning to the French River year after year.
