PLAN YOUR ONTARIO FISHING TRIP
A little work before departure keeps the trip focused on the water. Confirm the legal details, route, gear, lodging and backup plan before the vehicle is packed.
Licence and rules
Use Ontario's official licensing service and current Fishing Regulations Summary. Find the Fisheries Management Zone for your water, then read the species table and all waterbody exceptions. Check open seasons, size rules, catch and possession limits, bait restrictions, sanctuaries and gear rules. Save a copy that you can reach without cell service.
Pack for changeable weather
Bring layered clothing, rainwear, a warm hat, sun protection, insect repellent and dry footwear. Add required safety equipment for your boat, a first-aid kit, drinking water, spare medication and a way to charge or protect your phone. Remote guests should follow the operator's weight and packing list rather than guess.
Know the boat and route
Confirm boat size, motor, fuel, charts, launch needs and docking. If you bring a boat, inspect the trailer, tires, bearings, lights, batteries and safety gear. On unfamiliar water, ask about marked hazards, shallow routes, wind exposure and safe places to wait out weather. Leave a daily route plan with someone on shore.
Fish care and meals
Pack a rubber net, long pliers, hook cutters and a camera that can be used quickly. If you plan to keep fish, check the legal size and number, then bring a clean cooler and ice. Use Ontario's Guide to Eating Ontario Fish for waterbody advice. Never assume a fish meal guideline is the same for every lake or every person.
