ONTARIO WALLEYE FISHING
Walleye fit many Ontario trips. They can be caught from a small inland lake, a large northern reservoir, a broad river or the open water of a Great Lake.
Read the water
Walleye often hold where food and comfortable water meet. That may be a windblown point, the edge of a weed bed, a river current seam, a neck-down area, a rocky saddle or a deeper break. Light level, water colour, wind and bait movement all matter. On a new lake, begin with a map and a few likely travel routes instead of racing from spot to spot.
Simple methods work
A jig tipped with live bait or soft plastic is a useful starting point because it can be fished vertically, cast or drifted. Bottom bouncers and spinner rigs cover water at a steady pace. Crankbaits work when fish are spread across flats, weed edges or suspended water. Trolling lets a group test depth, speed and colour, while casting suits shallow rock and weeds.
Build the trip around the lake
Some lodges sit on compact lakes where sheltered water is close to the dock. Others give access to large systems that reward good charts, a reliable boat and local knowledge. Ask how far guests usually travel, whether boats include depth finders, if bait is sold nearby and how weather affects the water. A guide on the first day can shorten the learning curve.
Handle fish with care
Have pliers, a rubber net and a camera ready before the fish reaches the boat. Support the body, keep the fish low and limit time out of water. Fish pulled from deep water may need extra care, and local rules may require release within certain size ranges. Read the current regulations before the trip and follow the lodge or guide's handling advice.
