ONTARIO FISHING LODGES

The right lodge is not always the fanciest one. It is the place that fits your group, your fishing goals, your travel style and the amount of help you want.

Full-service fishing lodges

A full-service lodge may supply meals, boats, fuel, guides and daily help. This style suits groups that want to spend most of the day fishing and little time shopping or cooking. Ask exactly what the package includes, how meals are served, whether guides are shared or private, and what tackle or licence items guests must bring.

Housekeeping cabins and family resorts

Housekeeping stays put the group in charge of meals and daily timing. Cabins may range from simple units to large cottages with full kitchens. Family resorts often add a beach, paddling, playgrounds or nearby attractions. Ask about bed layouts, kitchen equipment, linens, drinking water, dock power, fish-cleaning space and where groceries are sold.

Remote outposts

An outpost gives a group private access to a cabin and quiet water. Access may be by floatplane, boat, train or remote road. The operator may provide the cabin, boat, motor and basic equipment while guests bring food, sleeping bags and personal gear. Read the packing list closely. Remote trips run smoothly when everyone knows weight limits, pickup times and emergency steps.

Questions worth asking

Ask how far guests travel from the dock, how exposed the lake is to wind, whether a backup boat is available, where fuel and bait come from, how power is supplied and what happens during bad weather. Confirm deposits, cancellation terms, taxes and arrival instructions in writing. A short, direct call often tells you more than a long list of slogans.
