Spring fish and shallow water

Early in the open-water season, walleye are often close to shallower structure and moving water. A jig and minnow is a time-tested choice because it lets an angler work slowly, stay near bottom and learn what the fish want. Casting small jigs or crankbaits along rocky shorelines and points can also produce when fish are spread out.

Spring weather may change quickly. A warm afternoon can wake up a bay, while a cold front can slow the bite and push fish a little deeper. Keeping the approach simple helps. Slow down, pay attention to the depth where bites occur and return to spots that share the same features.

Summer patterns across big water

As summer moves along, many walleye shift toward deeper reefs, humps, island edges and breaks. This is where a depth finder and a good lake map earn their place in the boat. Anglers can drift or use controlled boat movement to keep jigs, live bait rigs or other presentations close to the depth holding fish.

Trolling is useful when fish are scattered or when a group wants to cover a longer edge. It also helps anglers see how one reef joins another piece of structure. On Lac Seul, learning the route between spots can matter nearly as much as choosing the spots themselves.

Northern pike add a jolt

Northern pike give Lac Seul anglers a second fish to chase. They often hold near weed edges, shallow bays, points and places where smaller fish gather. A spoon, spinnerbait or hard bait worked around cover can bring a fast strike and a hard run beside the boat.

Pike are also a fine choice for families and mixed groups. They strike with little warning and bring plenty of excitement, even when walleye fishing has slowed. Carrying long-nose pliers, jaw tools and a proper net makes hook removal safer for the fish and the angler.

Respect the size of the lake

Lac Seul is large water, and that is part of its draw. It also means anglers should pay close attention to wind, fuel, boat range and the route home. Weather over an open basin may be very different from the calm water near a protected dock.

A good day starts with a charged phone, working safety gear, rain clothing, food, water, a map and a clear plan. Ask lodge staff about the forecast, hazards and the best route for the conditions. When the lake gets rough, fish protected water or return early. There will always be another point to try tomorrow.
